Johaug Breaks 31 Minutes in Hytteplanmila Debut With Personal Best

Therese Johaug made her first appearance in the Hytteplanmila on Saturday and came away with a personal best, clocking 30:51 over ten kilometres on the road, according to VG. The time took her under the 31-minute barrier and improved on the 31:32 she recorded on the track at Bislett in 2021.

VG reports that Johaug was surprised when she heard her finishing time during an interview with the outlet, reacting with disbelief at the 30:51 figure.

Her run places her in a small group: she is now the third Norwegian woman to go under 31 minutes for ten kilometres on the road, following Karoline Bjerkeli Grøvdal and Ingrid Kristiansen.

Why it matters

Breaking 31 minutes on the road is a rare achievement in Norwegian women's distance running, and Johaug reached it in her very first outing at this race. The result also lands at a moment when she is openly building toward longer distances, with a marathon debut already scheduled and an Olympic marathon on her longer-term radar. For a former cross-country skiing star still establishing herself on the roads, going under 31 minutes in a debut over the distance is a strong marker of where her running currently stands.

A target she described as ambitious

Johaug told VG that the sub-31 goal had been a bold one, but that recent training had left her feeling good enough to chase it. She described the conditions and the organisation of the race in positive terms, and said the company she now keeps on the all-time list was great fun.

The race itself was close at the front. Hanne Mjøen Maridal crossed the same 31-minute threshold five seconds after Johaug, finishing third in 30:56. Swedish runner Merat Bahta took second place, one second ahead of Maridal.

A showdown between Johaug and Grøvdal had been anticipated, but Grøvdal withdrew ahead of the race. She told NTB earlier in the week that a strain injury had been troubling her and prevented her from running on flat ground. Grøvdal holds the course record in the Hytteplanmila at 30:32, set in 2020, per VG.

From Copenhagen to Valencia

Saturday's result follows a strong half marathon in Copenhagen in September, where Johaug ran 1:08:43. VG reports that performance made her the best European in the field and the fourth-fastest Norwegian woman in history over the distance.

After that race she raised the possibility of aiming for the marathon at the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028, and earlier this week she confirmed that she will run her first marathon in Valencia on 6 December.

In the men's race at the Hytteplanmila, José Carlos Pinto took the win ahead of Narve Gilje Nordås. Pinto is coached by Gjert Ingebrigtsen, according to VG.

Johaug's next confirmed start is the Valencia Marathon on 6 December, where her debut over 26.2 miles will show whether her road progress carries over to the longer distance.
